Lake Animal Hospital offers high-quality surgical services to our patients and clients.
At our facility, we have the capability to perform a wide range of soft tissue and orthopedic procedures. Our veterinary staff is dedicated to providing the highest level of safety and care before, during, and after your pet’s surgical procedure.
Prior to surgery, we will perform a complete physical exam of the animal, we also offer a full range of pre-anesthetic blood work options to ensure your pet is healthy enough for surgery. All of our patients receiving general anesthesia receive an intravenous catheter that permits the safe injection of anesthetic drugs.
During the surgery, your pet will receive IV fluids to ensure proper blood pressure and hydration. To maintain adequate breathing during the procedure, an endotracheal tube is used to deliver oxygen and anesthetic gases directly to the lungs. A certified veterinary technician will monitor your pet during the surgery. The technician uses monitoring equipment that measure blood pressure, heart rate, and oxygenation. Your pet will be kept warm throughout the procedure and recovery with hot air blankets and warm water pads to prevent hypothermia.
Controlling pain in your pet is an important part of our mission at Lake Animal Hospital. Animals have similar neurological pathways and experience pain in much the same way that people do. At Lake Animal Hospital we utilize a multimodal approach to manage pain in our surgical patients. We try to preempt their pain by giving all animals an injection of an opiate such as morphine, prior to their anesthetic induction. Local and regional anesthetics are used whenever possible to block the neurologic pathways of pain. Finally, injectable non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) are given after the procedure to control swelling and inflammation. Additional postoperative opiates are used if indicated. Surgical patients are discharged with either oral opiates, NSAIDS, or a combination of both to ensure comfort at home
Minimize Hospital Stays
Hospitalization is stressful for both pets and their owners. At Lake Animal Hospital we are dedicated to minimizing the hospital stays for our surgery patients. We believe that pets recuperate from surgery better at home where they are more comfortable and less stressed. Over 90% of our surgery patients go home the same day.
